Deconstructing Puniyani & Et al 1

Now let us discuss, a couple of representative articles of the pseudo thought process. The first “Explained: Quran case, and the powers of judicial review” by Faizan Mustafa  and the second being by one Ram Puniyani  “Quran, Madrassas and Terrorism: Wasim Rizvi’s motivated Understanding of Islam”.

There seems to be lot of ad hominem talking, how Wasim Rizvi is not a so great, and even not a scholar in ABCD and how wrong he is in his claims much of that was in the news which Puniyani and Mustafa too repeats, so we need not touch those points again unless necessary.

If not now then at some point, as per Arshia Malik prognosis ‘ABCD’ liberal baby thought is going to get bigger and bigger. Sultan Shahin’s one of recent article does not take Rizvi line but very well exposes issues and asks fellow ABCDs to address the issues theologically but with progressive liberalism, Najmul Hoda also joins in asking for review of verses by scholars and water (read) down those whichever are incompatible in a modern world.

Puniyani & Et al.: ‘American conspiracy coordinated and funded by the United States. America in a shrewd operation picked up a sectarian version of Islam and the words kafir and Jihad were given a twist to brainwash the Muslim youth being trained in some madrassas of Pakistan.’ 

Puniyani & Et al. is talking far less than half truth here, while it is true that during the Cold war era U. S. Americans funded Center for Afghanistan Studies of University of Nebraska-Omaha  for developing and distributing  explicit warring culture  prone Islamist curricula for Afghan children in Pakistani Madrasas, but there was  nothing in the curricula that was not there in some interpretations of ABCD already

  • As far as the word ‘Kafir’ is, it’s no one else but Puniyani & Et al.  plainly misleading the audience towards minuscule truth and largely untruth, we will come to that latter. About the word ‘Jihad’, for a moment suppose if Pakistan and Afghanistan would have been non-violent Jain majority countries, in what way Americans backed up with all their intelligence and money could have twisted the words Jihad? or even the word Kafir for that matter?
  • For centuries together north African the Barbary pirates used to loot Non-ABCD ships, in 18th century  they continued to loot vessels of the politically  upcoming USA in spite USA was not at war from its own side, there was no Israel  then, any cold war hasn’t begun with Russia, they had no enmity with any Muslim nation either in 18th century.   • Ram Puniyani & Et al. does even know the name of Egyptian Sayyid Qutb before saying it is all invented in modern times by Americans?

  • What was the crime of Kafirs in Kafiristan to be forcefully converted, if Afghanistan wanted political unity at end of 19th century how religion of Kafirs in Nuristan was going to come against political unity? Even if it is considered America or someone else had part influential role still how does it absolves any adult’s moral and legal responsibilities? 

Moreover Puniyani & Et al.’s any such claims are theologically problematic to ABCD since no human intervention should be able to change the text either way, so theologically Puniyani & Et al. has no scope to suggest Americans or any one else can influence sacred text.

On the other hand Ram Puniyani & Et al. would also find it difficult to answer; if at all Americans could make negatively intended influences then what is wrong if any Rizvi seeks positively intended influences.

So the point is, certain interpretations of word ‘Jihad’ can have violent repercussions not only for war and terrorism reasons but also other extreme behaviors like participating in riots to intolerance to any sort of criticism.

Was or Is Deoband controlled by the U.S.A. ever? Listen in from 17:30 to 18:30 (Minutes:Seconds) to the admirable  interpretation of Jihad  given by Arif Mohammad Khan to Arfa Khanum Sherwani of the Wire interview available on YouTube (Upload The Wire:Dt.Jun 27, 2019), vis-à-vis how Deoband’s curricula given interpretation defines Jihad as ‘going to war against those who do not accept their religion’ (again quoted by Arif Mohammad Khan). Then what is wrong if any Rizvi goes to the Supreme court with a petition?  Whether preaching of such text/interpretation does not go against freedom of religion and life given by the constitution of India to all other citizens?   

It’s not that Deoband did not issue any peace loving fatwas at all ever but as Shahin criticizes such overtures as mere event management, since mullahs practically retain same age old questionable narratives in day to day discourse, teachings and preaching and do not address issues in depth sincerely so as to face the new age with due spirit. Evident result, for Non-ABCD is, normalization of such sever death scare in God’s name while claiming oneself peaceful!

Deconstructing Faizan Mustafa & Et al. apologia

Faizan Mustafa & Et al.:  “…No one can take away anybody’s life as it would be contrary to Article 21, which guarantees right to life and personal liberty to everyone. But Muslims are certainly entitled to believe that the Quran is the “infallible word of God”. No court has the power to examine the veracity of this belief….”

Mustafa goes on to quote national and international laws against taking one’s life, but is not ready to revisit what is being preached in the name of religion? And he is a Vice Chancellor of a National level University of Law, in India! How much equality of human rights of non-ABCD as per (Indian) national and international law (emphasis added) are taught in Deoband and other Madrasas curricula in India? 

Would  Faizan Mustafa & Et al. sincerely admit how many of ABCD used to put “infallible word of ABCD” above the law and constitution or that may deserve  some academic research to find out from Urdu Khutba and print literature?  

Vivid binary of believer Vs. non-believers- distrust

Irrespective of whether Deoband kind of curricula and literature causes violence on ground or not, does it not contribute to a vivid binary of believer Vs. non-believers and help build layers of distrust among communities. And it is just not non-ABCD followers who suffer in the process. A lot of ABCD has been cause of  many sectarian persecutions of individuals and groups among Muslim communities themselves. If not each, then any mullah can proclaim  even voice of women to be awrah (sexually attractive hence private Ref:Ambreen Agha June, 2015), and if any parents follow such interpretations  for their daughters human rights even to sing or to express oneself freely can be at risk, if any (non sufi) religious orthodox family does not permit then a budding  A.R Rehman  won’t be able to use many sort of Musical instruments, any budding M. F. Husain won’t be able to draw even a horse and forget drawing of the other human figures, many expressions of art and sports would be difficult to be presented socially. Just think if some one has some natural skill or inclination to perform and stagnant culture would be practically suffocating for so many of individual skills. With use of liberal interpretations some individuals or groups may be enjoying all sorts of freedom for a while but an orthodox gets the chance all the recreational freedom can go haywire in matter of little time. Even in the midst of writing this article, a news story of a celebrity from the entertainment industry leaving his newly established career for good comes in. It is not a question of some ABCD individual decision of sanyasa (renunciation) for himself/ herself, it is an indicator of i) reach of orthodoxy keep making a come back ii) and most such people, directly or indirectly, would be doing their utmost  that human fraternity around them follow the same pattern and keep away from recreational growth of the human personality, if possible by denying agency to one’s free will starting from religious moral policing, at times even resorting acid attacks to honor killings. How far human beings can be converted to machines sans liberal enjoyment of faculties of and for one’s own life. The ABCD orthodoxy does not affect only recreation it can affect so many segments of life from education to economic prospects to vaccination and health.        

And still most learned (? in human rights too??) Faizan Mustafa & Et al. wishes to punish liberal reformers for their crime of speaking truth to their fanatically rigid ABCD coreligionists? That too using a constitution which is supposed to be freedom of expression friendly!

May be ‘First Information Reports’ in literal sense what they are, but when Mustafa’s co-ABCD files FIRs in police stations; rather than explaining them, that a human being is supposed to have approach to court of law without getting persecuted for the same, the so called legal luminary Mustafa & Et al. seems insulting principle of ‘boundless egalitarianism’ and take anti-‘fundamental human right’ stand; absolving the orthodox fanatics through their Faizan Mustafa & Et al. and expects rest of the people to believe in term tolerant and peaceful ABCD! May be people would want to believe in but are pretentious Puniyani & Mustafa Et al. are really helpful in that direction? or otherwise is true? What kind of credibility and trust is built up through Faizan Mustafa & Et al.? moderate, liberal or otherwise is usual big’?’

Will BJP be able to help AIADMK retain the throne in Tamil Nadu this time?

In the 2016 Tamil Nadu assembly elections, BJP could scrap nothing despite riding high on the Modi wave in the Northern states in contrast to its national counterpart INC which bagged 8 seats and indeed the state parties AIADMK and DMK which secured 134 and 80 seats respectively. That time AIADMK under J. Jayalalithaa could secure a majority despite a tough competition from M. Karunanidhi led DMK since people had an unshakable faith in her leadership. INC was a well-known ally of DMK and to counteract the plan of the INC gain foothold in southern territories and resign it to a defeated position, BJP tried its level best to form an alliance with AIADMK, to no avail.

BRIEF HISTORY ON THE BITTERSWEET RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN BJP AND AMMA

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) [a father-figure for the BJP] has always harboured a fetish for AIADMK due to its ideological proximity and tried on multiple occasions to form a successful alliance, which not only failed or was a lost cause, but also earned the wrath of erstwhile ally DMK’s patriarch Karunanidhi who went ahead to form a lasting association with the INC led UPA in 2004 and led to the latter’s victory in the year’s Lok Sabha elections by helping sweep 35 out of 39 seats in Tamil Nadu, whereas BJP led NDA drew a blank even with Jayalalithaa’s support. After this setback, the AIADMK never allied with the NDA.

A point to note here is that BJP also lured the AIADMK to induct it into its state alliance since 2006, however the overtures were ignored by Jayalalithaa for two reasons. One, Jayalalithaa wanted to maintain a neutral stance in terms of her preference for one national party (BJP) over other (INC) and wanted to keep her doors open for both. Two, she feared that an alliance with BJP would cannibalize her Hindu vote-bank in case BJP decided to drop off in the future.

In 2014, BJP formed a front with smaller parties of Tamil Nadu such as DMDK, MDMK, PMK etc. since Jayalalithaa declined support this time. However, the alliance could not stand strong with conflicts in political interests between the constituent parties and the alliance fell apart few months before the Tamil Nadu State elections in 2016, leaving BJP no other option than to return to their beloved Amma, only to receive the same cold response.

POST AMMA’S DEATH

Amma’s death left an irreplaceable vacuum and created chaos in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape. Initially, the AIADMK was split into two factions competing for leadership, one led by O Paneerselvam (OPS) and the other led by E Palaniswami (EPS). The state had 3 chief ministers in the period of 2016-17 before the BJP stepped in to negotiate a truce between the chief minister EPS and OPS. This eventually led to re-inclusion of the AIADMK in the NDA for the 17th Lok Sabha elections held in 2019 and there has been no turning back thereafter.

FAST FORWARD TO 2021

BJP has adopted a well formulated modus operandi in Tamil Nadu between 2019 and 2021 –

  • Induction of OBC (Shudra) and Dalit leaders into high ranking positions such as the president and vice president of BJP’s state unit
  • Ensured compliance to Hinduism as a whole and the perpetrators had to face a severe repercussion

On March 14 2021, it was announced that the party would be contesting from 20 constituencies under the aegis of AIADMK including Coimbatore South, Thousand Lights and Kanyakumari. The DMK led INC would lock horns at 5 of these constituencies.

BJP’S ELECTION MANIFESTO

  1. The administration of Hindu temples will be handed to a separate board comprising Hindu scholars and saints
  2. 50 lakhs new employment opportunities will be created
  3. Tamil Nadu will be made Number 1 state in South India in Ease of Doing Business
  4. Fishermen assistance of Rs. 6000 per year would be provided like its being provided for farmers
  5. Under the Jal Jeevan Mission, pure drinking water through pipelines will be provided free of cost to every household in the state within 2022
  6. Government Multi-specialty hospitals will be established at all district headquarters in the state and treatment will be provided free of cost
  7. All essential commodities that are distributed through the Tamil Nadu Public Distribution System will be delivered to homes directly for all electronic ration card holders

PUBLIC SENTIMENT ANALYSIS

Many of the opinion polls indicate a landslide victory for DMK+ with it winning an average of 150 constituencies while AIADMK+ and BJP+ winning around 70.

However, the BJP leadership tells a different story. BJP Tamil Nadu President L Murugan expressed confidence that AIADMK+ would form the ruling party. BJP National General Secretary, CT Raju echoed with Murugan and also stated that BJP would secure a victory in all the 20 constituencies contested.

Political commentators have openly described the situation as dicey despite opinion polls owing to the volatile Tamil Nadu polity landscape. Though they believe that the result might be slightly in favour of DMK+, nothing concrete could be said until 2nd May, the date of declaration of results.

CONCLUSION

It is no secret that AIADMK is losing confidence among voters and is facing anti-incumbency after ruling for 10 years. BJP on the other hand with its caste politics strategy seems poised to win the vote-bank of Brahmins and upper castes (around 15%, majorly concentrated in districts like Chennai, Thanjavur, Madurai and Coimbatore), Nadar and Devendra Kulla Vellalar communities. Political analyst Sumanth C. Raman has stated that there is growing Hindutva sentiment and resentment against parties which seem to insult Hindu Gods and prominent Hindu figures which may work in favour of the party. Needless to mention, AIADMK+ has purported itself as merit based in contrast to its hierarchical counterpart DMK. The current chief ministerial candidate of DMK Udhayanidhi Stalin lacks political exposure making him a weak choice

However, if we look at the other side of the coin, there is a resentment for the BJP as well, evident from the #GoBackModi tweets whenever our Prime Minister visited Tamil Nadu. This probably stems from the notion that the state’s culture would be compromised, Hindi would be made a mandatory course, and Dravidianism would be undone. More importantly, public believes AIADMK+ would be a puppet government ultimately controlled by the Big Boss at the Centre. Therefore prima facie, it seems there would be a sunrise in the state rather than a lotus bloom this time. Therefore, BJP needs to rework its positioning in the state. While this would be simpler in case AIADMK+ comes to power, it would get arduous in case it is DMK+ instead

On Wednesday night, the Maharashtra government announced a series of restrictions called “Breaking the Chain” to combat the deadly increase in coronavirus cases in the state. Under these measures, participation in private government centers and government offices not related to the management of the COVID-19 pandemic will be limited to 15%. The measures entered into force at 20: 00 on Thursday and will remain in force until 7:00 on 1 May.

Attendance at weddings and wedding ceremonies will be limited to 25% and will be held as a single event in a single hall and cannot be extended beyond 2 hours. Offices providing basic services will have to operate at less than the required capacity, and no more than 50% of their staff will be present at any given time. The presence of people who provide these services is minimized and only increased to 100 percent when required.

Violations of the rule, according to the order of the state government, are punishable by a fine of 5,000 rupees. Private vehicles are not allowed to travel between towns and counties, unless it is an emergency requiring basic services. The use of private vehicles, with the exception of buses, is only permitted for basic services and for valid reasons, such as medical emergencies, if the driver is within 50% of the seat capacity. Violations of this rule are punishable by a fine of up to 10,000 rupees per year. Private buses may operate with a maximum of 50 percent of the seating capacity for standing passengers.

Urban and supraregional bus services are regulated and bus operators are instructed not to make more than two stops outside the city. Service providers who violate these policies can be fined up to 10,000 rupees, and repeated defaults can result in license revocation until the end of the pandemic. The use of public transport is limited to government, state, central and local personnel, medical personnel including doctors, paramedics and laboratory technicians, persons in need of medical treatment, and able persons and their companions.

Long-standing rules have been enforced on state buses, whose capacity is limited to 50 percent. All groups of people must have a valid ID. In state-operated private buses, passengers must receive a hand stamp from the bus company indicating the 14-day quarantine at home, or they must undergo a mandatory random antigen rapid test for all passengers.

On Wednesday, Maharashtra, the worst-hit state in the country, reported more than 67,000 new cases of COVID and 568 deaths – most in one day – linked to the virus in the past 24 hours. Mumbai recorded 7,684 cases and 62 deaths in the past 24 hours, followed by Nagpur with 7,555 cases and 41 deaths. Nashik, where 24 people died today due to an oxygen supply disruption caused by a leak in a tanker, reported 6,703 cases and 29 deaths. Pune remained the second most affected city with 10,852 cases and 35 deaths.

Why communication in English is gaining grounds

There has been a severe change in the education system since the 90s in India, where the focus has changed from providing holistic education to customizing education to suit the needs of a job. Students are now interested in knowing not just what is happening in the country but also in the world, which is unthinkable without the knowledge of English. Their interests have diversified and they are prone to accepting cultures which are pro-western. It is here that their interests have come to play a major role in shaping up their future and thereby the connection with English as a language has become inevitable for them.

A very slow yet steady move has been noticed in communication in English. Education is the prime ground where the necessity of English communication is felt. Parents are now interested in having their wards get admitted in English medium schools than any other vernacular medium since they have judged the potential of English communication and not just reading and writing the language. Communication would involve emoting and expressing through the language. When a student is uncomfortable with English as a language, he will never have the confidence to face the global audience comfortable with the universal link language, i.e English. Therefore the four components of communication, i.e reading, writing, speaking and listening may be compromised because of a language.

A grasp on the understanding of English as a language will reduce the hesitation propelling to do away with the language. This is widely seen as we notice that diction is now as important as the language itself. People are also trying to copy the accent of the west to show their fluency in the language. There is no doubt that it adds to their confidence. The structure, grammar, spellings have all got loose connections at times but yet they fulfill the need to satisfy the audience, since the message gets communicated in a language that is understood by the most.

Jobs are the ultimate achievement for many. There is no denial that there can be proliferation of opportunities if the language barrier is set right. Beyond the major cities, trapped in regional influences, the suburbs and the villages require a lot of grooming with English communication and the people have started feeling the necessity. The demand has been created but the supply is still far from satisfactory. We can expect that the third decade on the twenty first century would definitely see the rise in English communication, in the post-covid days, from the whole of India.

India’s “flawed” democracy and the colonial legacy

The news that self-appointed guardians of world democracy, the US based Freedom House and Sweden’s V-Dem Institute had downgraded India’s democracy to “partially free” and “flawed” has captured the headlines in Indian media.

In both the rankings, some interesting facts stand out. Out of the top 10 “most” democratic countries, 90% are either European or have a majority white Caucasian population. Not a single Asian or African country figure in any top 10 list. Even in the top 20 list, most of the names are either European or have a white majority population. Just one Asian country figures in the ranks between 10 to 20. In short, these organizations are hinting loudly that almost all of Asia and Africa are still immature democracies, which have not reached the aspirational heights of European democracies. An astonishing 6.2 billion people in Asia, Africa and Latin America are denigrated as incapable of governing themselves. An extraordinary colonial hangover and overt racism pervades these rankings. If denigrating 82% of the world’s population for not being European enough is not racist, what is?

This approach also fits neatly with attitudes which reflect the prejudices from a bygone colonial era. The hope of the west was that the former colonies will one day aspire to grow up in the image of their colonial masters. Even while this impossible dream is in progress, the imperial powers would not miss a chance to interfere and denigrate their former colonies.  South African academic, Steven Friedman argues that there are deep rooted prejudices when it comes to examining other democracies. There is an implicit assumption that the tens if not hundreds of millions of people in Asia and Africa do not have what it takes to select leaders who are truly democratic, and that outsiders sitting in the western ivory towers know better.

Europe has been actively involved in actively sabotaging democracy in places like Africa with France alone having staged 122 military interventions in Africa after 1960, at an average of one a year. Rwanda has recently blamed France for “enabling” the entire Rwandan genocide. Many European countries still retain their political, economic, and cultural hegemony over the colonies. To give one example, Margaret Thatcher’s son was arrested in 2004 for fomenting a coup in Equatorial Guinea. Officers involved in the bid noted that Margaret Thatcher herself approved this coup.[1]

Issues in European democracies:

The west has turned a blind eye when it comes to examining the health of its own democracies. Britain has an unelected House of Lords which helps in framing laws for the country. It has an unelected monarch answerable to none, which approves bills before it become law. The monarchy along with the House of Lords comprise two of the three pillars of British democracy.

Denmark, Norway, Finland and the UK do not even profess to be secular and have adopted Protestant Christianity as their national religion. But they figure right at the top of the rankings chart. The Scandinavian countries with populations of the order of 5 million each have the gall to tell countries 260 times bigger than them, that their version of democracy is far superior to the Asian version. Even a child realizes that it is easier to manage 10 people compared to 2600 people, every problem is magnified many a time. Adding to this storm is a toxic legacy of colonial hangovers, partition, incompetent leaders and economic destitution.

The antagonistic colonial masters:

India is at an interesting time in its growth trajectory. A country which Churchill once described as a “sweltering, syphilitic climate” filled with “gross, dirty and corrupt” babus and “rascals, rogues, and freebooters” posing as leaders, was never expected to have the ability to decide its own future. [2]

Europeans historically had an antagonistic attitude to India and a sneering contempt for anything Indian. To be fair, this derision was directed towards Asians, Africans and Native Americans. Indigenous tribes were “savages” waiting to be civilized. In 1890, just 6000 British ruled a country of 250 million people, justifying their plunder by blaming Indian “cravenness, cupidity, opportunism and lack of organized resistance.”[3] In 1937, an active proponent of eugenics, the infamous Churchill wrote about Native Americans and Australian aborigines “I do not admit that a wrong has been done to these people by the fact that a stronger race, a higher-grade race, a more worldly-wise race to put it that way, has come in and taken their place”. Macaulay, the founder of India’s current educational system noted that his aim was to create “a class of persons Indian in blood and colour, but English in tastes, in opinions, in morals and in intellect.”

This attitude continued to the 19th and 20th century. Macaulay noted that Indian culture and languages are “fruitful of monstrous superstitions. We are to teach false history, false astronomy, false medicine, because we find them in company with a false religion.” Churchill called India “a beastly people with a beastly religion.” It was the white man’s burden to save the colonies from themselves and the idolators from their headlong rush to hell.

Colonial powers ensured the total despoilation of prosperous countries like India and China, which were the top two richest countries in the world. Both the countries contributed to 50-60% of the world’s GDP for millennia. When the British left India, the country was in ruins, torn into pieces and contributing to less than 2% of the world’s manufacturing capacity. Around three million Bengalis were made to starve to death to ensure British got the rations to win the Second World War. The same British politicians had the gall to pass a resolution on March 9, 2021 to debate the state off Indian democracy. The House of Commons blasted India after debating India’s internal politics and agricultural reform, which the IMF had paradoxically described as “a significant step forward” in removing middlemen, enhancing efficiency and supporting rural growth. Would the British prefer that 50% of India’s population earn less than 1000 dollars a year perpetually, while ensuring that their own population continue to make 48000 dollars a year in terms of GNI per capita into perpetuity. Is there fear that India farmers will take the overpriced service jobs in Europe and do it cheaper and more efficiently, using the model that China has employed so successfully?

2019 was one of the most galling moments to British overlords still clinging to the past. For the first time ever, India’s GDP for the first time ever crossed the GDP of the United Kingdom. With falling birth rates, abysmal innovations in the tech sector and the Chinese monopoly of world’s manufacturing, Britain and Europe have to witness the rise of China and India and watch their steady slide to obsolescence.

Mistakes of the past:

This article does not mean to absolve Indian leaders of blame in guaranteeing political freedom. India’s model of governance is closest to a totalitarian autocracy. Instances of democratic tyranny abound before and after independence. The darling of the western press, Gandhi was infamous for ruling the Indian Congress Party with an iron fist. In 1946, Gandhipersonally overruled the overwhelming decision of 80% of Congress committees to select Sardar Patel as the first Prime Minister. The balance 20% had abstained from voting rather than vote for Nehru. Despite Nehru having zero support within his own party, Gandhi enforced his autocratic choice on the party and thereby the country.[4]

Nehru and Indira Gandhi presided over one-party autocracies and ruled like absolute monarchs. Nehru controlled both houses of Parliament and virtually every state government during his seventeen years rule. His anti-free market and anti-American proclivities were in full flow when he rejected US aid worth 1.5 billion dollars a year in 1959, promised by President Kennedy to industrialize the Indian economy and increase income by 25-30% a year.[5] If the offer was accepted, India would have begun liberalization and reform a full 21 years before China, and India would now have been probably richer and more powerful than China. Inspite of his socialist leanings, in 1962, Nehru was beseeching the US and UK to send help to prevent Chinese aggression on the border.

The Congress party dismissed popular governments by using the infamous article 356 no less than 93 times in their rule over six decades. Indira Gandhi was infamous for imposing Emergency on the country at the slightest hint of judicial opposition to her despotism. Her sycophants declared that “India is Indira and Indira is India.” Is Indian democracy any more fragile than what it already was?

Conclusion:

Journalists have posited the question as to why India is sensitive to criticism by foreign media, when it relishes their adulation. The reason is that because of its colonial past and centuries of exploitation, India is deeply suspicious of foreign meddling in the name of friendly censures. Blaming the victim for overreacting to bad news is hardly sensible.

It is time for India and Asia to recognize that Western criticism which may sometimes hold a mirror, can often be a legacy of colonialism. In addition, Canada, UK and other countries are also openly interfering in Indian affairs is appease specific votebanks in their countries. These votebanks typically comprise of wealthy religious communities made up of Indian diaspora.

The sudden burst of criticism from many quarters in the west is also a reminder that the Indian opposition having failed to win the trust of people on the ground, is behind many of the statements coming from abroad, in their pointless quest to embarrass the national government. It would serve the opposition and the country better, if instead of orchestrating ivory tower campaigns, the opposition in India gets closer to the actual reality on the ground and work genuinely to improve the lives of the poor. A couple of trumped-up media reports is no counterbalance to the fact that 229 million voters had made a specific electoral choice in the 2019 national elections. If the opposition is behind the spate of opprobrium, damaging India’s reputation is the same as cutting off the nose to spite the face. Blind opposition to every reform initiated by the Central government, will only remove the opposition from the minimal space it occupies at the present.

A young novelist lives under death threats in liberal and tolerant Netherlands

Turkish origin Lale Gül (23) is a student and female novelist living in the Netherlands under death threats and on the verge of stopping to write about Islam as reported by the Dutch news site NOS.

Lale was born and brought up in an ultra-orthodox Islamic community in the suburbs of Dutch capital Amsterdam. Ironically, though Amsterdam is known for its relaxed attitude towards gay marriages, euthanasia and even soft drugs, the city is surrounded by the ghettos where radical Islamists exercise control on the communities and especially on the girls like Lale Gul and impose their moral code of conduct inspired from the strict interpretation of Islam that you typically associate with the countries like Afghanistan and Pakistan. And the girls, when they want to break free from their conservative upbringing to integrate with the world around them, receive death threats and face social boycott even by their families. The story of this young novelist, Lale Gul, who published a novel titled, I am going to live (Ik ga leven in Dutch) is typical of second and third-generation offspring of Turkish and Moroccan Muslims who immigrated to The Netherlands as guest workers to earn living in the post-WW II industrial boom. 

In a recent TV interview, Lale Gül has said that she is not going to write about Islam anymore because her life has changed since she wrote the novel about the life of a girl, Busra, who is raised in an orthodox Islamic family of Turkish origin, rife with male domination and subjugation of girls. In the novel, Lale Gul challenges the hypocrisy of Islamic orthodox families and depicts the plight of youngsters whose outwards look is open and tolerant European society constantly on a collision course with the actors inside their society.

In the TV interview in this article, Lale Gül said “I will continue writing because I have received a lot of messages from the people who say: Please continue. But I am not to write about Islam. So be it, because you stand alone if you do it.”

After the publication of her debut novel, Lale Gül had to go into hiding to escape the fury of the Islamic orthodox community who branded her as the betrayer of the faith. Her illiterate parents, though they cannot read her book, are caught between making a singular choice between being part of a closed Islamic community or staying connected with their daughter. The hate against her runs so deep that walking with the uncovered face on the street in an Islamic ghetto, she can not escape verbal and physical abuse and even risk getting killed.

The Netherlands has arguably the best social welfare and health care systems in the world. In the last century, the successive Dutch governments spent hundreds of millions of Euros in so-called integration programs to assimilate the immigrants by teaching them the local language and European values. The outcomes of these programs were woefully inadequate because the Islamic immigrants did not imbibe the European values of freedom, equality and human dignity and instead of passing the values to the next generation of children, they exerted pressure on them to believe in exactly the opposite.   

Like most European countries, The Netherlands has no dearth of liberal and ultra-left political parties, newspapers and thinkers waiting to jump on any matter related to racism, asylum seekers and gay rights. But the voices of support for Lale Gul are weak, faint and suffocatingly rare to condemn the systematic violation of European values. This is a tacit invitation to Islamic radicals to gradually erode the confidence in the European value system.

Deconstructing Clergy & Et al.

Interestingly enough, clergy was not supposed to have much role in the original ABCD scheme of things beyond a few minor operational administrative roles. Let us include other middle men working at various religious institutions in the same category for the purpose of analyzing vested interests of orthodox conservative status quo.

Over the centuries the clergy and institutions of middlemen has firmly entrenched in a role of influencer which manipulates not only individuals and communities but also politics and a stubborn chain of vested interests came into formation which insists to maintain conservative orthodox status quo, giving primacy essentially to literalness in their preaching and resists change.

So this clergy feels threatened and behaves very insecure to any descaling, change or reformation and ends up instigating individuals and community around, into extreme positions, at every opportune moment.

Actually whatever financial donations get collected by ABCD religious bodies need to go for the benefit of the poor, their health and education and not much for clergy salary and enjoyments. But corruption is endemic and poor and needy do not benefit as much as they are supposed to benefit.

ABCD institutions stuck in foreign medieval white-wash narratives, taking Indians astray, need clean up and help in restructuring to bring them on path of Indian culture, national integrity and non-pseudo liberal modernism

Integrity and accountability are supposed to be important values in ABCD, but corruption in religious institutions is taking them astray from the ideal path. And hence states (i.e. governments world wide) need to legislate better for not only strict financial audit but also legislation are needed for most portion of collected donations are really reaching to deserving poor for their advance education (emphasis to advance) which will create reliable employment opportunities and health infrastructure and no-interest micro financing of product manufacturing which creates jobs while ensuring such financing will not wasted or will not create new illegitimate vested interests .

States (governments world wide) need to intervene to legislate to see at least fifty percent in numbers and amount beneficiaries are women including at all levels of religious institutional management (including AMU & JMI and India needs to essentially audit & reserve fifty percent shareholding management, editorial and journalist roles for women at Urdu media too). State legislation also needs to see that at every religious institution management has to have new members added and old ones retired to avoid continuation of vested interests. And clergy won’t have a chance to complain against such legislation since it does not directly touch ABCD religion in any way. These legislative steps are very essential to break present chains of vested interest in ABCD religious institutions. Especially in India Rizvi saga has given reason and opportunity to update on legislation relating clean up and improving working with transparency of ABCD institutions which should not be missed.

The same legislation should have provisions for anti-community hate audit of religious institutions including teaching, preaching and curricula of so called religious educational institutions (narratives @ universities like JNU, AMU & JMI also need to be audited), nothing can be sacred in any anti-community hate, whatever the sources of hate may be ought to be stopped if one wants to have true label of being civilized and peaceful. Of course here we are referring to anti-community hate only, definition of hate should not be skewed favoring any single community. Anti communal hate tools should not become instruments of stalling microscopic evaluation review and even criticism of dogmas, most important least amidst scholar to scholar level independence to criticize dogmas need to be maintained much more freely, then what it is now. While we talk of freedom of expression and freedom of religion it needs to come with the responsibility that every publicly available expression must include critiques from all possible sides then include a reply whatever book or expression may be. Legal provision to that effect will help avoid undue advantage and systemic biases.

Anti-community Hate using persons along with their family should be disqualified from religious institutional management positions for a certain number of years may be 2 years, each time they fail to take care along with them their family members too should be disqualified from so as to close all back door loopholes. For that matter whether it is main secular democratic institutions or nonindustrial nongovernmental and religious institutions the same person should not be allowed to officiate any position more than eight years if democracies are really serious to break chains of vested interest. And philosophically speaking breaking monopolies of vested interest and being egalitarian was the underlying positive objective of ABCD, so any ABCD follower would have every reason to support implementation of legislative institutional reforms. Suggestion is not that the government runs those institutions but is just to break chains of vested interest and bring in more transparency and effective agency to commoners through effective legislation.

Since decades pseudo ABCD press and media is too busy creating and continue recycling false negative impressions, misunderstanding, and scaremongering about Hinduism so moderate and commoner of ABCD would feel awkward to shake hands with Hindus and pseudo vested interests continue to benefit. Hinduness need to discuss among themselves how to break hateful ABCD & pseudo anti-Hinduism chain and bring moderate and marginalized commoners (Pasmanda) of ABCD, close to Hinduism. That would be possible through strongly encouraging ABCDs to embrace positive values of Hinduism like ‘always evolving to goodness’, ‘boundless truth’, Critical thinking and reasoning, ‘Maximum positivity with least breaks’, anti-violence filters like controlling one’s own Shadripu as discussed in next section in detail.

Theological right and duty to seek reason & truth

Such institutional reforms will pave ways for better quality inter religious dialogues with improved trust and improved inter religious harmony. As I have discussed in previous few articles, at theological and philosophical level interlocutors from Indic religions side need to strongly encourage ABCDs and even Jews and Christians too to adopting principles of ‘Maximum positivity with least breaks’* along with Shad Ripu (Arishadvarga) filters/controls  namely concurring over own: kama (lust), krodha (anger), lobha (greed), Mada/Nafs (Ahankara/arrogance), moha delusion), and ‘matsarya (jealousy), speaking about the same in their prayer congregations will help Christian & ABCD communities in their spiritual growth in seeking peace.

Like one of prominent Mahavakya in Hinduism ‘Satyam Shivam Sundaram’ accepting and correlating ‘boundless truth’ with God as most important attribute will allow for more openness for introspection, accept coexistence of communities (emphasis to without direct or indirect hate) which relate with God in many different way than themselves such as Hindus Buddhists Jain etc. Once every (ABCD) fellow decides discarding ahankara/Nafs (conceit & arrogance) and discarding anger will bring them Gods attribute of peace and ‘boundless truth’, which will allow them respectfully appreciate any effort or criticism whether coming from any Rizvi or anybody else as their own way to be on his religious path of seeking truth. So theological scope exists for reason and criticism, what is important is realization, awareness and respect for the same.

  • ABCD* texts themselves include at least some amount of self criticism, and still unfortunately  many ABCD followers not only seem to make noise, unpleasant displays of anger, arrogance and nuisance value and some take lives of others. Situation is so tricky that even well learned  would avoid naming it but instead prefer ways around to make the point, is that ‘the best peaceful’ of claimed to be ‘the peaceful’?      
  • Theologically speaking, adopting principles of ‘Maximum positivity with least breaks’ along with Shad Ripu filters/controls  namely concurring over own: kama (lust), krodha (anger), lobha (greed), Mada (Nafs/arrogance), moha (Infatuation), and ‘matsarya (jealousy),and speaking about the same will help ABCD (and other individuals and communities too) to  lower unnecessary loud violent pitch and help individuals pursue their constitutional rights, which includes hindrance-less and pressure-less access to Court of law, irrespective of merits, amicably.

In the previous month March 2021 one Wasim Rizvi came into the news with a little new reason with his PIL about some verses from a book  in the  Supreme Court. Which got dismissed in the first hearing itself on 12th April 2021, with a fine of Rs. 50000/- on Rizvi.(1, 2) By now some discussion has already taken place across the media. On OpIndia myvoice itself there seems to be a couple of  articles already written (1,2,3). Many pseudo seculars too must have written some articles, but search shows most of them just news  and not much detail or in depth analysis and view.(1, 2, 3, 4) The later 3 mainly March 30, 2021 dated Faizan Mustafa & Et al.’ “Explained: Quran case, and the powers of judicial review” in Indian Express the second being dated 1st April by one Ram Puniyani Et al. “Quran, Madrassas and Terrorism: Wasim Rizvi’s motivated Understanding of Islam”. are explored in this series of articles along with some usually less discussed points and views including prospects of ‘Liberalism and progressivism within ABCD.’  Ram Puniyani’s article seem to have been shared at multiple URL locations for obvious reasons.

Roots & addressing of similar wrongs not necessarily same

As one questions about inclination to violence in ABCD communities, most common refrain is to deflect responsibility by shifting goal post, whataboutery and skeptic’s phobias, rather than willingness to introspect and addressing causes within. In one Aap Ki Adalat example an ABCD fellow does Whataboutism (played regularly on social media), in another he is seen giving sever death scare in God’s name!

Two wrongs do not make one right. Ways to prevention of wrongs are supposed to differ as root causes, patterns, cultural and religious influences differ.

Mohammad Al-Issa

Mohammad Al-Issa (is the secretary-general of the Muslim World League, an international, non-governmental organization based in the Holy City of Mecca, Saudi Arabia.) in his Fox News article dated April 10, 2019 Says:

 Respecting the law is a two-way street….Dialogue is critical. Unless we talk to one another, even with those whose opinions we most virulently reject, how are we to define an inclusive national interest? Mohammad Al-Issa

Dr. Mohammad bin Abdulkarim Al-Issa, Secretary General of the Muslim World League

Issa says “… I tell Muslims everywhere … to embrace the nations they live in and to positively integrate….. It makes no sense to separate Muslim children and youth from the rest of society or to cloister them away in Islamic private schools. .…”

Issa says presently for a Muslim, to gain political advantage playing victim card may be tempting . Such trap benefits no country and no minority group, however great its grief.

Issa says “…We as Muslims must confront the problem from within, and see how our attitudes or behavior contributes to misunderstanding. This is not to say Muslims are culpable, but that we share a responsibility to make things better.…”

Issa says: “…We can teach our children religion without isolating them from their communities, or erecting psychological walls between them and the majority. …”

What Issa admirably speaks is inspiration for positive change, but practically one faces a very distant and arduous journey of proper understanding of the issues and social change. How would we find much in depth analysis on Rizvi kind of issues, when freedom of speech is practically almost restricted to all others except for ABCD’s  in form of one way traffic, notwithstanding constitutional rights of freedom of speech, especially when it comes to ‘ABCD’, rather than doing rhetorical naming, even if one just  says ‘ABCD’ and sure still most readers will get it. Even while attempting to write this studied article, one thought came to mind: is it still relevant and why does one dig out some complex aspects back, then there is another similar news came in with lot more complexities vis-à-vis ‘ABCD’, besides the judgement that rejected Rizvi’s plea; so we are for sure that our writings will remain relevant until ‘ABCD’ gets ‘progressively reformed’* and that may seem much a distant point of time as of now. Writing about complex social and religious issues where space for free speech is limited and remaining true to intellectual integrity and while maintaining semblance and poise is always a difficult challenge. 

Arshia Malik

On 1st of April, on YouTube channel a discussion  has been uploaded titled “Bharat Vichar with Arshia Malik’ on ‘why reformers are branded as heretics in Islam”. Malik, who seem to be Islamic feminist and proponent of Muʿtazila school of Islamic rationalist theological approach which asserts reason over text.

Malik states that post 12th century conditioning of community that lead to continued undermining of reason vis a vis text has proved to be intellectual self harming for her community itself and ‘reason’ needs to be given primacy again along with space for liberal progressive reformation. 

During this discussion, while pointing out their centuries old tradition of heretics and reformation, Malik admits about ignorance and conditioning in her community about the fallacy of infallibility and inerrancy, and much more important area of improvement is to address lack of critical thinking, which does not allow free discussion on many aspects and effectively stalls progressive liberal reforms.

Two recent, not directly but indirectly related, news stories brief about difficulties of Muslim education. While accepting the importance of education Malik very well points out that extremism is just not related to less-education, but critical thinking  plays a much  more important part.

Malik claims founding of ABCD itself begins with reformation by reformer founder who was unfortunately overshadowed by cultist followers, but heretics, reformers continued to show their presence like  10 th century Mansour Hallaj  who is best known for his saying “I am the Truth” (Ana’l-Ḥaqq) Avicenna and also Ibn Rushd (Rushd maintained that  scriptural text should be interpreted allegorically if it appeared to contradict conclusions reached by reason and philosophy). Malik states that all heretics are not necessarily non-believers but they are simply  someone with different opinions than that of popular opinion. Heretic focuses on hypocrisy, denial, on certain truths which are hidden or they are apologized away. Malik states that her community needs to address twisted [Self serving and patriarchal] interpretations, religious sanctions of wife beating, Mullahs are deliberately trying to instigate the ummah against complete civilizations. One thing one needs to understand is, it’s not that no social reform efforts ever happened among ABCD communities, the additional important problem is falling 10 steps backwards  after going one step ahead. So when any moderates or pseudo seculars praise greatly about steps ahead, a neutral observer is counting and concerned about 9 backward steps. A more liberal behavior of an individual or a group of Muslims is immediately praised as  progress! Whether a liberal Muslim behavior can be considered praise worthy? yes that ought to be, but that has not been sufficient due to fall back issues. Maybe step by step, but what humanity needs is assurance of achieving progress of more permanent nature without risks of falling back.

Deception may take few or no words, exposure takes a full report

Presentation of a wrong or uncontested analysis can continue to lead individuals or groups of humans on unexpected paths of life. . Unfortunately leftist and ABCD intellectuals feel they are automatically rational and perfect, but this fallacy needs to be sincerely contested. We also look into which points “Waseem Rizvi & Et al.” missed. That we do through this series of articles.

Could withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan impact India?

US after spending almost $ 2 trillion (Rs. 14,93,08,00,00,00,000) on their troops in Afghanistan in the last two decades finally decided to bring all of them back by 11 September 2021. Since a week after the 9/11 attack in America in which nearly 3,000 people killed, the US had airstrikes in Afghanistan and deployed their troops to kill the mastermind of 9/11 attack Osama Bin Laden and removal of radical Islamic terrorist organizations (Al-Qaeda, Lashkar-e-taiba). Along with US its NATO allies also deployed their troops.

The peace deal

Withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan was a priority of Trump administration. After lot many meetings and negotiation lately on 29 February 2020 an agreement signed between the United State and Taliban by special representative khalilzad signed a formal agreement in Doha with Taliban deputy political leader Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar in front of a number of international observers (The Peace deal).

Accordingly US and its NATO allies would have to withdraw all their troops within 14 month from Afghanistan, removal of sanction on Taliban leaders and release of prisoners held by both the sides and ceasefire in Afghanistan And Taliban will not allow any of its members, other individual or groups including Al-Qaeda to use the soil of Afghanistan to threaten the security of the United State and it allies. However, the Afghanistan government was completely sideline during the talks between the US and the Taliban. Therefore the future for the people of Afghanistan is uncertain and will depend on how the Taliban honours it commitment. US President-elect Joe Biden’s new administration has given green signal to the deal after a halt due to the election in US. They have fixed 11 September 2021 dateline for the return of remaining troops from Afghanistan.

Threat to India

The first and the foremost risk is terrorism (Al-Qaeda, Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed), while the US-Taliban agreement state that the Taliban will prevent terrorism outfits from operating on Afghan soil, there is a little clarity on how the agreement will be verified and enforced. The Taliban group is making money to the tunes of $1.5 billion through the drugs trade, As Afghanistan is the world’s largest producer of opium and most of opium puppies used for heroines are grown in Taliban held areas. This money they are using for jihadist terrorism and radical Islamic terrorism.

The second risk is that the good influences of Pakistan’s inter-services intelligence (ISI) which shares an undeniable link with the Taliban (especially the Haqqani group) and Pakistan also responsible for funding of money and weapons to Taliban. So Pakistan with or without the help of Taliban continue to be throw the Jihadis violence in Jammu and Kashmir, the fact of the matter is that India’s problem in Kashmir originate and emanate from Pakistan.

The third risk to India is that India has invested billions of dollar to the development of Afghanistan. About more than $ 3 billion aid to Afghanistan so far. Due to which Parliament house, roads and dams have been built in Afghanistan and still working on around 116 Community development project (this includes education, health agriculture, irrigation drinking water, renewable energy, sports and construction of administrative infrastructure). But there is a possibility that the peace agreement may result in part of the Taliban return to Kabul and control over Afghanistan which led to huge losses to India.

Defending strategy for India

Broader Diplomatic Engagement: India should consider appointing a special envoy dedicated to Afghan reconciliation. The envoy can ensure that Indian views are expressed at every meeting, broaden engagement with the Afghan government and other political actors, and reach out to certain Taliban representatives.

Continued Training and Investments: India should provide more military training to Afghan security forces and invest in longer-term capacity-building programs. It should actively support and invest in the National Directorate of Security (for example, by providing training and sharing intelligence). Finally, given the continued levels of violence and the impact of the coronavirus on the Afghan economy, India should expand its development assistance.

Working With and Through Others: India should look to broaden its engagements with Iran and Russia, explore opportunities for cooperation (as limited as they might be) with China, and find common ground with the United States on Afghanistan’s future. This does not mean forcing competing interests to align; it means investing in a wider diplomatic initiative with the view to carve out areas of convergence.

India: A republic being nation

Nation building in India

India is fighting with the new, more infectious, and rapidly spreading strain of Wuhan Virus. On 16th April the newspapers reported on one hand about India recording a historic more than 100,000 cases in 24 hours, on the other hand about the 18% historic jump in Chinese economy[1]. India is witnessing an unprecedented stress on its economy and the infrastructure on the domestic front whereas trying to somehow manage the global readjustment after the coordinated stalemate move of Russian federation and China against the United states of America. It can also be said that the socialist capitalism is taking on the democratic capitalism at this point of time in the world and India finds itself again stretched between the architecture of socialist democracy and capitalist democracy. It’s a direct question on identity and hence requires a revisit of the movement which got quite intensified in the last decade with the name of “Nation-building”.

Diversity and Unity

There is no harm in identifying the fact that the Mahalanobis model, which is also called Nehruvian model, of development remained aloof from identifying India as a nation in its true sense. This may be a critical claim but is powered by the conscious choice of going for a bureaucratic development rather than social transformation and it says a volume. Precisely, the decision making process remained with the elite where they enjoyed the political immunity in the repackaged state-craft. It may be claimed that there was a dearth of options before the decision makers then, but along with that it must be recognised that it was a limitation on the part of decision makers’ imagination and hence the failures cannot be passed on to the paradigm.

The reason for calling it a failure is the result of India being more of a “republic” that a “democratic nation”. The recognition of this fact is important because the shadow of the same is making India run out of its time to gain the right attitude in its daily life. That is visible when India is seen trying to make space in the hard global order with soft tools. And that is because there is very less capitalisation of the country’s human capital. It would hardly be an exaggeration to say that India does not live like a nation. Rather she lives like a multinational nation where the smaller nations are system less, capital less and in emotional marriage with a quasi-self-actualization approach. And hence the idea of “Unity in diversity” in philosophy turns out to be “diversity in unity” in practice. That’s exactly where the faultlines of “India as a nation” are glittering.

Common ethnic strings 

After getting exposed to the theoretical part of Indian polity and the practicalities of governance mechanisms at macro and micro levels, what I have observed is that India is yet to realize her strength to harp on an influential journey of global evolution. And that can happen only when we channelize the energy of most of the individuals in creating assets, services and capital. But the critical requirement for that to happen is the union of visions and targets. The diversity of unity is certainly a stumbling block there. The energies are powered by divisive ideas of tribal, lingual, casteist, regional and religious ethnicity.

In general, the politicians are bashed for making religion and caste-based manifestos and creating representative positions with the same criteria. But from the other side of the table, it’s hard to find an alternative tool which can fetch the desire of self-determination of each individual of equal magnitude as done by caste and that to the extent where one invokes sovereignty and chooses the government. The Vedic scholars recognise caste as an alien concept of identity because Vedas organised the identities in Indian society on the basis of individual’s profession, skills and values and the most significant fact of it is the permeability of different categories. But, ignoring the fine utility of caste as an identity tool in electoral politics in today’s India will be a wishful thinking. The groups which cannot be targeted through this tool, are subject to the more ambiguous one i.e. religion.

Religion and the politics

The influence of religion is not new in world politics. There is a legacy of “nations” taking birth due to religious movements. And that’s why there is a sense of threat to the aspirant modern nation states from the remote-controlled religious groups. The loyalty of a group of people to an external religious power center, fueled by superstitious convictions, is a threat to the sovereignty of the government of the land and hence to the will of the people who voted. Probably this projection is something which the Nehruvian model overlooked in the smoke of western results – packaged in the narrative of secularism and made up of hardcore religious majoritarianism.

It is a fact that the nationalism of identity does not leave space for any other identity. And if there is a trace of any alternative identity, it is certainly a compromise to the idea of “nation”. The confusion created by that paradigm in Indian context is the confusion which Indian population silently exhibits at the global stage. We are trying to fit a circular seat in a square chair!

Pandemic and the national identity

It may appear that these issues may be addressed later as we are amidst a pandemic. True that. But the needs need to be recognised right now otherwise we would be overpowered by the quest of comfort of daily normal life and the status quo. This very absence of a clear daily governance framework & structure and the resulting invisibility of common individuals through systemic channels is what has earned us so much confusion about how to deal with the pandemic crisis. Here are some of the symptomes – Like floods and Tsunami, this crisis has also been encashed by the lower bureaucracy to deepen its pockets with black and bribed money; the migrants have exclusively shown no confidence in the government when they faced life threat due to washing off of the economic opportunities; when the developed nations were vaccinating themselves, India was vaccinating others and now she herself is under deep distress and the working class now is the prime target of the virus – why? Because there is a deep desire to be an influential power with good will of the world, but the fundamental plot is shaky, and it chokes in pressure. The Indian community wants its students to bring innovation, but it does not want its lads and girls to think on their own and act accordingly. There is a certain amount of respect for an established business entity and they are accepted in the community but there is hardly any acceptance for the one in making an enterprise. I think the above examples clearly express the under current of our confusion between what we are doing and what we want to achieve!

What to be fixed?

So what to change? The change has to happen in the fundamentals. The web of marriages to contradictory values and actions need to be cleared out. If we want to be a modern nation, we must have no other identity than the national identity. If we want to be a modern religious nation, we must devise ways to ensure clear and non-negotiable religious visions about relevant national goals. If we want to be a capitalist democracy, we must say it out loud and clear the path so that the same can be achieved. Cascardi’s observation seems to be instrumental to express the current ethnic equation. He observes “The modern subject is defined by its insertion into a series of separate value spheres; each of which tends to exclude or attempts to assert its priority over the rest”.

At the moment, Indian system of governance appears to be in need of a change to the extent where means are prioritized over the ends. Precisely, the rank of economic development needs to be equated with the administration of justice. It needs to create a synergy in the education system and the governance where the student of class tenth can witness his/her village taking decisions in Gram Sabhas in actual rather than just memorizing the process for the sake of answering questions in examination. As ends are not the means, similarly the urge to make India a nation does not mean India is a nation. This confusion needs to be cleared out to make this republic a nation.
