Subhas Chandra Bose will continue to inspire millions of youths at present and many more years to come.

Subhas Chandra Bose wrote in his book ‘Dreams of Youth‘— “…we have been born into this world in order to fulfill a purpose – to spread a message. Just as the sun rises to flood the earth with light, as flowers bloom in the forest to spread their fragrance, as the river rushes to the sea to bring the sweet refreshing rain– we have come to this world, full of joy and with the fullness of our hearts, to establish a truth. And that is to discover the unknown and mystical purpose of life, through contemplation and a life of action, which only can make our otherwise senseless existence, meaningful.”

Subhas Chandra Bose had Immense belief that the youth can make this world a better place. Hope, Sacrifice and Courage are the special attributes of youths. Bose had inborn qualities of leadership and charisma and he could sacrifice for the good of the larger community – selflessly. We come to know about his social work from a very young age, from his unfinished autobiography, ‘ An Indian Pilgrim ‘. As a child, he was greatly inspired by the teachings of Swami Vivekananda and Ramakrishna Paramhansa and we could find his influence and dedication towards their ideals in his own writings. His ideas of freedom and social justice were purely drawn from the tradition and culture of India and not from the West.

It is widely known that Subhas Chandra Bose resigned from ICS in 1921 (2021 is the centenary year of his resignation), it is not widely known that after he returned to India, he focused on the role of the youths in India’s freedom struggle and independence from British rule. He wanted and was successful and inspiring the youths and engage them in nation building and fighting for India’s independence.

Subhas Chandra had toured the country and addressed many student, youth and labour Conferences. When we go through his speeches, we find that he was much ahead of his time and much of what he said still remains relevant today. In addressing the first Youth Conference in Nagpur in the then central provinces, Bose had declared– “every human being – man or woman – is born equal, and he or she shall have equal opportunities of development – that should be our dictum … there should be equal opportunities for education and development“.

Bose had firm belief that in the process of fundamental transformation of society, the youth has a key role to play. What he believed that the youths must march forward with characteristic idealism, thoughts and ideas, and most importantly character development which was inspired by the ideals of Swami Vivekananda. He said– ”thought without action cannot suffice to build character, and for this reason, participation in healthy activity– political, social, artistic etc– is necessary for developing character“. (Speech at the Punjab Students’ Conference, Lahore, 19 October 1929)

Bose always wanted the youths to have a vision of a better world and character. In the absence of both, life would be rooted to materialism and freedom would become meaningless. At the same time, as Bose said without freedom, an individual and a nation cannot live in dignity. That is why he wanted the young generation to develop their minds, strengthen their character and have unflinching faith and determination in the national struggle for freedom and justice and the youths must be ready to sacrifice for betterment of the nation.

We have now crossed seventy four years as a free nation. But sadly, we have not succeeded in creating the just socio-economic order and a genuine democracy that Bose had envisioned. We are still mired in poverty, illiteracy and diseases. Some of our young people have made great strides in technology and the sciences. But an unacceptable number of our youth have little access to education and life’s opportunities.

Bose had declared, ”The students’ movement of today is not a movement of irresponsible boys and girls. It is a movement of responsible, though young, men and women who are inspired with the one ideal of developing their character and personality and thereby rendering the most effective and useful service to the cause of their country.
(Excerpts from Presidential address at the Students’ Conference held at Lahore on October 19, 1929)

The Youths of Present, must get inspired by the ideals of Subhas Chandra Bose. Today, there are many youths who have achieved success in many fields, though there are many who are unable to get proper education in spite of their urge to know more and serve the nation. It is the youths who can transform a nation and strive for its glory. The youths of present must lit the fire of Nationalism, Character development and a vision of a better world and march forward together keeping aside ideologies, because it is NATION which comes before everything. It is Sacrifice for the Nation which is the greatest salvation a youth can achieve.

We have to and we shall inculcate in the rising generation, feelings of patriotism, national oneness, self sacrifice for a greater cause, courage and a concern for the poor— these qualities of which Subhas Chandra Bose was a shining example. No youths of India shall be blind followers of any foreign ideology and Subhas Chandra Bose himself declared it in a speech in Calcutta. LET THE YOUTHS OF INDIA UNITE. LET THE YOUTHS STRIVE FOR INDIA’S GLORY. Jai Hind!
