As an infantry soldier, I can feel the seething anger flowing through the veins of the Bihar troops, who have lost their Commanding officer and 19 men to a cowardly act of the Chinese thugs- the People’s Liberation Army.

An infantry unit is like a family where the Commanding Officer is the head, and killing him, with deceit, will not be forgotten nor forgiven by his troops.

The 16th Bihar regiment’s remaining officers, including their second-in-command, have a tough job on their hands. While they keep their nerves under control, as they prepare for whatever action that might follow, they also have to reassure their boys and keep their morale high.

Our senior military commanders have one choice- Let the boys loose. If they don’t – they will never be able to face them again.

No Negotiation: At the time of writing this opinion piece, some Indian news reports claim that the Chinese might be holding a few Indian soldiers in their custody. This situation, if true, should not deter Indian leadership and senior military commanders from taking military action. In a military conflict, there will be casualties. Thus, we should not allow the Chinese to use our boys as a bargaining chip.

Both the strategic and tactical Commanders know very well; their men neither understand nor do they care for diplomacy. The men know one thing; conflict stories live through generations. The Bihar regiment would want the Galwan story to be written on its terms and not that of the cowardly Chinese thugs’

By not taking action, we would destroy a battalion’s military history and its morals for the next 30 years. And, imagine the blot that would leave on the boys’ psychic from the 16 Bihar Regiment.

Activate the LAC:  It is time to activate the LAC and call out the Chinese bluff. Indian troops should occupy the territory where the Chinese are vulnerable.

Talking peace with China hasn’t gotten us anywhere – PLA undertakes annual incursion and thumbs its nose at us. Let us show them we are not a soft state. Our non-violence philosophy is not a sign of weakness.

The Galwan valley incident should become the inflection point in the Indo-China relationship.

This turning point would force the Indian civil and military leadership to change its approach towards China forever. No more soft approach. We have to work towards cutting the Dragon’s tail.
