Education and its issues in India

The real problem that India faces today is with education which has lost its holistic approach as well as its effectiveness. It gains even more importance if we add the vulnerability towards manipulation which is the greatest danger that modern education poses.

Before getting into detail we will have to understand the difference between approach of modern education in comparison with traditional Indian knowledge. Modern education is supposedly a study built on the scientific development over last couple of century. It has its origin in west where everything in the name of education started with control of church. Hence from economics to science everything has its development through the prism of religion.

On the other hand Indian traditional study has a greater dependence on assimilation of all the factors and hence education is holistic instead of giving preference on specialization. Hence two are poles apart and their comparison is completely irrelevant. Moreover Modern education built on the prism of western opinions is completely in contrast to Indian point of view so the translation of same has been a huge disaster for us.

If we take a simple example the concept of state according to western concept is primary holder of all the properties on its boundary hence concept of acquisition comes. This concept arises since state as an entity has its roots from churches which were the primary owner of the properties but in Indian context its complete opposite. A king has to negotiate with owner of property as its completely the individuals choice on the transfer of the property.

Coming back to the point of discussion the translations in modern education has been the biggest disaster. Eg nationalism doesn’t exactly translate into “rashtrawad”. Reason is simple that the countries in Europe are built on the basis of races. Hence Prussian race can boast of a German nationalism but in India the origin of country attributes to Sanatan dharma. At earliest known point of time India had many kingdoms but all had same or similar kind of religious beliefs. Lets say during time of Bhagwan Ram there were many kingdoms like Ayodhya, Mithila, Kishkindha, Lanka and so on but all form part of Aryavart or Bharat. Hence if we really look at such translation we will be lost without any point of return.

Moreover in Indian polity we keep hearing nonsense like left and right which has no meaning as Indian polity is completely different from western concept. As explained above power of a king is different from concept of a state. A king in Indian polity is custodian of private properties while a state in west is owner of all those. Hence Indian polity suggests a combination of socialist and capitalist policies since there is a Dharmik role associated to every aspect of politics. This neither looks to control the resources as its own nor gets carried away by profit motives. Hence the fundamental difference between the two makes huge difference between the educational approach which further alienates us from our traditional sense.

An education should help solve local problems as with change in culture, geography, climate, social beliefs etc nature of problems change. Hence we must try to correct our approach towards mending our education system on traditional value bases. This will require us to understand the education on holistic approach rather than specialist approach. Its needed as everything is a chain cycle. Like say for example existence is relates to food which relates to health and allocation of resources. This will define economics, polity and which will further lead to scientific developments and so on. Similarly this chain can be defined in other cycle also.
