Indian Liberal’s Stockholm Syndrome: “THANK YOU, IMRAN KHAN”

The day is March 1, 2019 and India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, insinuates that in their persistent efforts to criticize and malign him, the political opposition has drifted so far off from coherence that India’s diplomatic position could have been compromised. This verbal attack on the political opposition during heightened tensions with the neighbor Pakistan invited criticism and appeals for not politicising the issue, but there seems to be more truth than politics in this statement.

Let’s go back to September 29 when India’s Surgical Strike on militants occurred eleven days after the Uri attacks. Several members of the opposition questioned the legitimacy of the strikes along with Pakistan. Evidence for the same was released a year later.

Indian Air Force’s strike on terrorist camps in Balakot, Pakistan is again looked at with scepticism by Mamata Banerjee and others, taking Pakistan’s stance that the strike failed despite IAF claiming to have fulfilled its objective.

When news arrived of Wing Commander Abhinandan being captured in POK after ejecting from Mig-21 Bison aircraft, PM Modi was blamed by the left for war-mongering and playing with the lives of soldiers, despite news reports that Pakistan attempted to retaliate on Indian military establishments and IAF acted in self-defence. Arvind Kejriwal’s theatrics are being used in Pakistan for characterising PM Modi as an incarnation of Hitler, hell-bent on creating conflict and destroying lives through war.

After Pakistan’s Prime Minister announced the release of captured IAF pilot, Wing Commander Abhinandan, there emerged a frenzy and several liberals didn’t think twice before showering praise upon Imran Khan for the supposed ‘gesture of peace’. Journalists such as Sagarika Ghose and Rajdeep Sardesai declared it a diplomatic victory for Imran Khan. The same Imran Khan whose country continues to harbour terrorist organisation responsible for the death of 44 Indian soldiers in the Pulwama attack.

The same Imran Khan whose foreign minister, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, admitted to the fact that JeM chief Masood Azhar is in Pakistan to CNN and that they are in constant contact with him and his organisation to BBC news. There are laughable calls within Pakistan for rewarding Imran Khan with Nobel Peace Prize, the seeds for which were sown by fellow Indian liberals. I would say this is a Stockholm Syndrome developed by the left from the proxy war carried out by Pakistan for so many years, because the alternative explanation, that their allegiance is not with India but it’s enemies, is too painful.

India’s persistent efforts to disclose Pakistan as a terrorist state on the international stage paid dividends as United States, France, Russia, Israel and plenty other nations stand with India and demanded Pakistan to end its support to terror. Pakistan, with its faltering economy, did not have a choice in seeking to deescalate by releasing Wing Commander Abhinandan after such international pressure. Furthermore, the doctored video of him released by Pakistan government shows their true intentions.

Abhinandan inducted himself into the Hall of Bravery when he shot down an F-16 aircraft with a much inferior one and it is our responsibility to show the same courage as him and stand beside our country as we seek justice for our martyrs.
